Alam yang masih utuh, sesuai dengan batas-batas fungsi kawasan semestinya, seyogyanya tidak boleh tersentuh oleh aktivitas manusia. Utuh suatu kawasan merupakan kesatuan dari semua komponen alam di dalamnya sehingga suatu lingkungan terjaga keberlangsungannya.
Demikian halnya dengan kegiatan patanjala di kawasan DAS Kuranji yang daerah hulunya berada di kawasan Taman Nasional Kerinci Seblat. Tepatnya di Gunung Bongsu dengan ketinggian 1550 mdpl. Akses menuju kawasan gunung tersebut dari Kota Padang melalui jalur punggungan diperkirakan memakan waktu 7 sampai 8 hari (sekitar 22 km).
Kebutuhan kami terkait kajian hulu adalah kebutuhan bahan ukuran tangkapan air S. Kuranji untuk penyusunan zonasi sungai yang keberadaannya kontradiktif dengan kawasan hulunya. Salah satunya, hilangnya fungsi kawasan perlindungan pada badan sungai hingga muaranya.
Tepat di hari ketiga, kami memutuskan untuk mencari jalur alternatif, karena di salah satu punggungan menemukan jelas jejak kaki harimau yang menurut data kehutanan di kawasan perbatasan Kota Padang dan Solok ini terdapat 60 individu. Seluruhnya di kawasan TN Kerinci Seblat ini populasinya, kurang lebih, hanya tertinggal 300 ekor. Dari kondisi fisik, jejak tersebut kurang lebih berusia dua mingguan.
Atas pertimbangan tersebut, maka di zona temuan tersebut yang hanya berbatasan setengah kilo meter dari batas hutan lindung, melalui pendekatan patanjala dilakukan penetapan zonasi perlindungan habitat.
Tim memutuskan untuk melakukan kajian hulu utama DAS Kuranji dari wilayah timur laut, tepatnya dari Danautua, Kabupaten Solok. Memang jarak menjauh, tetapi ini yang sepantasnya kita lakukan agar keberadaan predator tertinggi ini, di Indonesia hanya tertinggal di pulau Swarna Dwipa ini, tidak terganggu.
Harimau Sumatera ini terakhir masuk kawasan pemukiman informasinya beragam, dari 2 hingga 10 tahun yang lalu. Bahkan pernah terjadi kontak fisik dengan manusia. Diyakini oleh warga sekitar, harimau menyerang manusia, karena kesalahan manusia membuat batas atau patok.
Dipercaya selama tidak menggangu daerah kekuasaannya, harimau tidak akan pernah menyerang, bahkan akan membantu manusia.
Kami melakukan kajian perlindungan habitat dari batas sungai yang berhulu ke Bukit Kumango hingga muara Sungai Kuranji.
Terimakasih, di habitat aslinya, kami dipertemukan dengan jejak satwa yang sangat kami hormati. Sementara di tanah kelahiran kami, pulau Jawa, tinggal cerita. Jauh sebelum kami lahir, hewan ini sudah dianggap punah.
Maka, kami dengan "incu putu" Sumatera, diawali dari DAS Kuranji (Sumbar) ini bertekad untuk menjaga sesuai kemampuan kami, keberadaan alam dan seluruh pengisi aslinya tersebut.
